The Portulans Institute invites applications for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Portulans Democracy Project (PDP), an initiative focused on identifying and analyzing democratic innovations worldwide.
This role is ideal for a recent PhD graduate with a strong interest in democratic processes, digital technologies, and mixed-methods research.
Location: Based in Oxford, UK; Washington, DC; or remote
Commitment: Full-time desirable, but part-time candidates will be considered.
Duration: 9–12 months, beginning September 2025
Compensation: Negotiable.
Qualifications:
- A completed PhD (or equivalent) in political science, Internet studies, policy studies, information and communication studies, or a related field
- A demonstrable interest in and academic or practical experience with democratic structures and processes, especially topics such as civic participation, political innovation, governance reform, or institutional design.
- Familiarity with digital media and communication technologies, including platforms such as social media, civic tech tools, and artificial intelligence applications in political or civic contexts.
- Experience conducting case study research, including fieldwork or desk-based analysis; cross-national comparisons; and/or use of mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative approaches).
- Proven ability to analyze and synthesize complex information, communicate findings clearly, and contribute to policy-relevant outputs.
- A track record of high-quality research publications or outputs. Applicants should submit at least two samples of recent written work, preferably single-authored, that demonstrate independent thought and analytical rigor.
- Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to contribute to collaborative discussions and workshops with both academic and policy communities.
